As parents, we strive to be the best parents we can be. Reading a book on discipline, flipping through the latest issue of a parenting magazine, conducting hours of research on just the right preschool, or going to a workshop count as parent enrichment to better the lives of our little ones.
I know I have no problem reading a parenting magazine but am always slow to commit to going to a parenting workshop. I have nothing against workshops. I just seem to come up with a long list of excuses including lack of child care and an unwillingness to travel that usually prevents me from attending.
I may not be able to make excuses much longer. The Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Parent Academy has an extensive list of workshops being offered at different schools in Silver Spring. Launched just this fall, the free workshops are conducted by MCPS staff, community partners, and government organizations and help parents access school and community resources.
Workshops are offered each month and include a wide range of topics appropriate for parents of preschoolers through high school. Free childcare is available for those ages 4-12. Also, interpreters will be provided if requested at the time of registration.
If you are like me and don’t want to travel far from home, the following workshops are being offered in February at schools in Silver Spring:
- What is a 504 plan?
- Active Communication Skills for Parents
- Learn to Navigate the School System
As Tech Savvy Mama, I highly recommend the Keeping Kids Safe on the Internet workshop which will be taught by Larry Wong, a colleague and MCPS Information Technology Security Officer.
Check out the schedule of workshops for February and visit the site again to view the spring offerings.
To register for workshops, call 301-517-5940 or 301-279-3100.
For questions about the Parent Academy, contact Marcia Vogel (Marcia_s_vogel at mcpsmd dot org or 301-279-2053).
See you in class!
Leticia (aka Tech Savvy Mama) is a MCPS employee who just learned of the MCPS Parent Academy Workshops. Leticia thinks she might have to attend the Learn to Navigate the School System workshop to see what else she might be missing!
