My family and I had been blown away earlier this year by The Adventure Theatre ‘s productions of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and Go, Dog. Go! But Goodnight Moon is our favorite. The beautiful set recreates the artwork that is beloved by our children and our own childhood memories. The innovative script, songs and interpretation of the book were a new creation entirely!

Every element of Margaret Wise Brown’s classic story and Clement Hurd’s illustrations are utilized for imaginative, funny and always engaging effect. The little mouse that peeks around the corner of the woodpile is a puppet and a comedic ham, the pictures on the wall of the little bunny’s room come to life and tap dance. And the quiet old lady and the sweet little bunny tucked in his bed? Well, let’s just say that before the last “goodnight moon” and “hush” are whispered, a lot of silliness happens between this lad and his bunny grandmother.

My four year old son had already enjoyed shows at the Adventure Theatre since the gorgeous new theatre opened this fall, but this was the first live performance my two year old daughter has attended. As it was the telling of her all-time favorite story, it was a perfect introduction to theater for her. We NEVER had to whisper hush to either (usually boisterous) child – they were completely mesmerized. My husband and I were all smiles, for the play is a delight for grownups too. The cast are top-rate actors, singers and dancers and we truly felt we were having an intimate Broadway experience.

APISS gives The Adventure Theatre’s Goodnight Moon its enthusiastic recommendation. Shows of the production at the Glen Echo Park location are sold out, but there are tickets available still for shows at the Atlas Performing Arts Center throughout June.
