Disney On Ice With Kids Is Totally Worth It

Minnie on Ice

The kids and I saw Disney On Ice Disneyland Adventure at the Verizon Center last night and I highly recommend it for families with kids toddler through middle school age. My five year old son Charlie and almost-three year old daughter Eve had the best night of their lives, and are today basking in the afterglow of seeing Mickey, Minnie, Cinderella and The Incredibles in the (costumed) flesh! Since we’re not able to take a vacation to Disneyland or Disneyworld this year, it was just so perfect that Disney came to us here in the DC area.

Meeting Mr. & Mrs. Incredible right before the show started was an off-the-charts experience for my preschoolers. Check out the kids’ super hero stances – they’re channeling Violet and Dash.

With The Incredibles

Before the show started, we had to get the requisite snow cone in a souvenir cup (which this morning were perfect for eating cereal out of in front of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. So they’re a little Disneyed-out the morning after their magical night, what of it?)

Dash & Charlie

Then we waited in eager anticipation for the show to begin. My kids were fascinated and full of questions. “Mickey, Minnie and The Incredibles know how to ice skate?” “Will Mickey be a cartoon or a real guy?” I tried to explain that though wearing costumes, the magic of Disney cast members is the minute you see them, you forget that and they miraculously are the characters you see on television and movies. As soon as the show started, the kids completely understood.

Mickey has that easily-recognized jolly mouse voice, Dash actually “runs” across the ice just like in the Pixar-animated film, and the action on the ice is vibrant enough to transport kids to the Disney worlds they love. The story of the ice show is The Incredible family takes a vacation to Disneyland in their everyday disguises, and while there they meet the Disney characters and go on the rides. The tea cups, jungle boat cruise, It’s a Small World, Pirates of the Caribbean, Thunder Mountain all make appearances. My favorite joke was that Mrs. Incredible kept wanting her family to go into the Tiki Room but no one else was into it. (Aside: The TikiTikiTikiTiki Tiki Room is one of my personal favorites too, but on my last trip to Disneyland on a childless bachelorette party trip, the other girls all rolled their eyes and murmured wishes for rum in their Dole pineapple drinks as I bounced merrily along with the birds. Even away from my kids I’m dork mom. But I digress.)

Also making appearances are oodles of beloved Disney characters: Cinderella (Eve absolutely flipped out when the famous up-doed princess came out with the Prince in her coach), Snow White, Goofy, Pluto, Buzz Lightyear (Charlie’s life is now complete to infinity and beyond.) After the intermission/preschooler pee break, The Incredibles’ super powers are put to the test with lots of adventure, suspense and action. There are also surprising technologies, props and animatronix put to use, I was really impressed. Hey, I’m being deliberately obtuse because I think you and your kids should go and I’m not going to be known as the buzzkilling spoiler of Disney On Ice, what do you take me for?
