Lincoln exhibit at the Library of Congress

Did Friday’s list of family-friendly activities celebrating President Lincoln’s 200th birthday get your motor running? Well you’re in luck, there’s more!

On Thursday February 12, Lincoln’s actual birthday, With Malice Toward None: The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Exhibition opens at the Library of Congress. The nation’s oldest federal institution is a great field trip for kids in of itself and home to the collections of 23 U.S. presidents. But now is the perfect time to check it out, for not only is a visit to the Library of Congress completely free, the following incredible artifacts of President Lincoln’s life will be on display:

  • The Bible upon which the 16th president took his oath of office on March 4, 1861. President Barack Obama swore upon the same Bible on his inauguration last month.
  • A draft of the Gettysburg Address that Lincoln gave his personal secretary John Nicolay. It’s believed to be the earliest copy that exists.
  • Contents of Lincoln’s pockets the night he was assassinated including two pairs of spectacles and lens polisher, a pocketknife, a watch fob, his linen handkerchief and brown leather wallet containing a five-dollar Confederate note and newspaper clippings (several favorable to the president and his policies).
  • The first draft of the Emancipation Proclamation that Lincoln presented to his full cabinet on July 22, 1862.
  • Lincoln’s First and Second Inaugural Addresses.
  • Mary Todd Lincoln’s jewelry including a seed-pearl, gold necklace and matching bracelet. The items came to the Library in the 1930s as a bequest from Lincoln’s granddaughter.
  • A rarely-seen letter exchange written during the 1860 presidential campaign between the Lincoln and Miss Grace Bedell concerning the possible benefits of his growing a beard.

Check out Somewhat Frank’s review and video of the exhibit.

The exhibit will surely be a fantastic way to make history come alive for your children in an utterly beautiful setting. If you live outside the DC area, you’re in luck: those unable to make it to the Library of Congress in person can experience the exhibition online through the Library’s new myLOC.gov Web site.

With Malice Toward None is open February 12-May 9, 2009 in the Library of Congress’ Thomas Jefferson Building in the South Gallery, Second Floor at 10 First Street SE. Exhibition hours are Mon-Sat, 8:30am-4:30pm.
