APISS Weekend Picks July 18-19

In honor of Brookside Gardens’ 40th Anniversary, see the Wings of Fancy butterfly exhibit FREE on Sunday

As discussed with Tommy McFly on Mix 107.3 tonight, here are the APISS top picks for summer fun this weekend. This time I stuck to standard family festivals, no extemporaneous make-out or thrill-seeking advice. (I think skipping the glass of wine before the show is a good call.)

SATURDAY – MONDAY

Apollo Family Day & Family Weekend at the Newseum
Saturday is the big family day bash, and Sunday and Monday also contain oodles of fun for kids in honor of the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11′s historic landing on the moon. For all three days of the celebration, three kids get free admission for every adult ticket purchase in your party. If you have children age 7-18, that’s a savings of up to $39. (Kids 6 and under are always free at the Newseum.)

Special kids’ activities on Saturday include designing and launching your own rocket, creating telecommunications satellites, reporting on the Apollo anniversary celebrations live from the moon on Newseum Network News, the Newseum Astronaut Training circuit, leaving your own moon footprint and designing a flag to plant on the moon. From 9am-5pm, at 555 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20001. Directions.

SATURDAY

Summer Safari Festival in Gaithersburg
Head to the Gaithersburg City Hall Pavillion for a kids’ carnival, Squeals on Wheels petting zoo, performances by Rocknoceros and XM Radio’s Robbie Schaefer (“Robbienoceros), interactive exercises for kids by FunFit, even a family scavenger hunt. The fun starts at 2pm and continues until 6pm. The City Hall Pavillion is located at 31 S. Summit Avenue, Gaithersburg, MD.

SUNDAY

Brookside Gardens 40th Anniversary
Another big 4-0, this celebration is offering tours of the popular butterfly exhibits FREE, as well as free moonbouncing, kid game-playing, cake-eating and music-listening. Celebration from 10am-8pm, free butterfly tours from 1-4pm. 1800 Glenallen Ave, Wheaton, MD.
