At last year’s Petfinder event at Discovery in Silver Spring, kids had a blast!

Looking to kill the “witching hours” tomorrow afternoon between 4-6pm with your kids? Come on down to a super fun and informative family event, the Third Annual Petfinder and Discovery Channel Adoptable Pet Fair at Discovery Channel Headquarters in downtown Silver Spring. The entire community is invited!
There, you and your child can learn about animals, nosh on free snacks, pick up some fun giveaways of swag (for both people and pets,) and maybe even win cool prizes in the on-site giveaways! The event is held outside the big Discovery Building in the outdoor sensory garden, which is a fun destination in itself. And families are welcome to check out all the cool displays inside the Discovery lobby. But most importantly, your kids will enjoy seeing and petting the adorable adoptable pets that are also attending the event. There’ll be dogs and cats from more than 10 local Petfinder.com member shelters and animal rescue organizations.
Petfinder (www.petfinder.com) is the largest online database of adoptable pets. Since it launched in 1995, Petfinder has been responsible for more than 13 million adoptions.
One of those adoptions? None other than my family’s own Oliver Twist McFadden (aka Ollie, pictured below.) We are so fortunate that we found this fuzzy little member of our family through Petfinder. The site allowed me to search by location, by breed, for pets that could be adopted if you have children and other pets. I fell in love with Ollie online, went to meet him in person and the love was mutual (I sound like one of those eHarmony ads.) He’s now being loved to pieces by two parents, two human sibs and one cat big bro (who after a wary couple days, now completely adores him.)

By adopting Ollie, we not only gave a needy pet a home, we supported the great work of the local rescue organization that was fostering him, PawPrints Across the Heart in Odenton, MD. And there are oodles of participating Petfinder shelters and rescue organizations throughout the DC area! I highly recommend searching for your fur-ever friend through Petfinder and saving the life of an animal in need.
