Boy, it was it a great day to be a friend of Jessica McFadden! Thanks to Jessica, two of my close friends and I were gifted tickets to attend the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s Music Box concert downtown at the Silver Spring Civic Building in December. The concert was the first in the series the BSO is putting on in Silver Spring this year.
The Music Box series was created for babies/toddlers ages 6 months to 3 years old. Our group consisted of Kennedy, Hank, and Ava, aged seven months through two years. We were sure to arrive 30 minutes early to take part in a full range of fun musical and creative activities for both the little babies and our awesome toddler.
Kennedy, the toddler, especially enjoyed the great coloring table they had set up with festive printouts, as well as cute arts and crafts. Hank and Ava played a few tunes on the musical floor piano and loved the different baby-themed stations which included blocks, musical toys, plush carpets, and more. The staff members were welcoming and seemed to enjoy the sights and sounds of our children making the most beautiful, ear-wrenching noises — they even included a thoughtful stroller parking area.
The concert space was huge and accommodating for all of our diaper bags, gear, snacks, and, of course, our precious lap babies. Yes, I did say lap! The crowd all sat criss cross applesauce and were able to hold babies in laps or let spunky toddlers dance and wander around the room.
Classical winter and children’s songs were performed by a small symphony ensemble and one amazing hostess. The entire performance was interactive, fun, and really tuned into the kid’s imaginative and musical skills.
After the performance, the children were invited to interact with the musicians and try out their musical skills by plucking a few chords – with supervision, of course! It’s definitely 30 minutes worth of fun for both the little babies and the energetic toddlers. We all agreed that we would highly recommend this to anyone with a little.
Insider Mom Tip from Ashley: If you go on a Saturday, you can take part in downtown Silver Spring’s Fenton Street Market which boasts amazing vendors featuring farm-fresh produce, cheeses, honey, floral, and decadent sweets. It’s located directly in front of the Civic Building and adjacent to the ice skating rink.
Saturday, February 27th’s Music Box shows are all about Great Big Animals. Kids will sing, move and learn about elephants, rhinos, bears and more. Families can listen to the music, bounce, clap and move just like these great big animals! Hosted by Khaleshia Thorpe-Price. Don’t forget that 30 minutes prior to each concert the lobby fills with a range of musical, creative and fun activities for babies and families. Created for babies ages 6 months through 3 years old. Attendees of all ages are required to have a ticket.
Choose either the 10am or 11:30am shows and get tickets!
