Wind your way through a sculpture park of original works of art situated on the museum’s rustic grounds.  ARTINA 2017 creates awareness among visitors of the need to reconnect with nature and preserve nature for future generations. Art can serve as a mediator between nature and people to call public attention to the benefits of a healthy and environmentally meaningful and sustainable life.  The diverse, layered concept of ARTINA 2017 functions not only as an aesthetic stimulator to promote a creative and sustainable environment, it also helps us to understand the connection between humans and nature.  Visitors will find beauty in materials and forms, and recognize their importance within living systems.Juried by Ursula Achternkamp, artists include c.l. bigelow, Elsabé Dixon, Mary Annella “Mimi” Frank, Eve Hennessa, Martha Jackson Jarvis, Jin Lee, Cat Lukens, Raina Martens, Grant McFarland, Maryanne Pollock, Marc Robarge, Casey Snyder, and Diane Szczepaniak.  Take a free art class with three of the artists: Diane; Marc; or Maryanne.ARTINA 2017 is the second collaboration between Sandy Spring Museum and Washington Sculptors Group.  This project is funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. This exhibition features ink washes by painter Ilya Gefter, a Visiting Artist at the Yellow Barn Studio. Each piece is a product of engagement with a place, be it an ancient ruin, a palazzo, or an anonymous residential structure. Gefter strives to distill the experience of both urban and natural forms to their essence: form and light. Light can both reveal and distort the forms, but in either case, it imposes a visual hierarchy and geometry. Gefter hopes to capture the ever-shifting geometry of light. The ink’s flow is hard to control; its contact with paper is irreversible. Within the limitations of this demanding medium, a sensitive application can open up its stunning potential to evoke the experience of form, light and space. These three principles are the central visual themes of my cityscapes. [less-]

Abandoned by his birth parents and unable to speak for himself, DJ Savarese (“Deej”) found not only a loving family but also a life in words, which he types on a tect-to-voice synthesizer. As he makes his way through high school and dreams of college, he confronts the terrors of his past, obstacles to inclusion, and the sometimes paralyzing beauty of his own senses. In his advocacy on behalf of other nonspeaking autistics, he embraces filmmaking and poetry, and discovers what having a voice can truly mean. In this first-of-its kind collaboration between a veteran filmmaker and a nonspeaking autistic, Robert Rooy and DJ share editorial control as they navigate the challenges of representing autism. Deej, the result of this often difficult partnership, is a story told largely from the inside, by DJ —not by his parents or autism experts or even the camera. At its core, Deej reflects the level of participation that disability rights advocates insist upon: “Nothing about us without us. [less-]

The Countryside Artisans of Maryland represent a collection of artists that live and work in the countryside, in and around Montgomery County’s highly-regarded Agricultural Reserve.  The way the Ag Reserve inspires these artists every day emerges in their work.  The Countryside Artisans use the agricultural landscape either as their material or their muse, and often both.  In short, the Ag Reserve feeds their work.As you roam the countryside through this exhibit at BlackRock Center for the Arts, observe how the textiles, fiber, stone, oils, watercolors, pastels, glass, clay, stoneware, and porcelain reflect the natural and diverse beauty of our local rural landscape.  The Ag Reserve satisfies not only our fundamental need for subsistence, but also our fundamental need for creation.Meet the Artists Reception: Sun, Sept 17, 2-4pm Community Art Day: Sat, Sept 23, 11am-2pm Montgomery Countryside Alliance Royce Hanson Award Celebration: Sun, Oct 22, 3-5pmImage:  Autumn Reflections by Cynthia Jennings, Windsong Studio, watercolor [less-]
