Docs In Progress is proud to be based in diverse, vibrant, and historic Montgomery County, Maryland just outside Washington DC. We also believe in the power of documentary to bring community together. Our eighth annual Community Stories Festival highlights the stories of people, places, and events from our local community. The festival is open to the public and gives local residents a chance to learn more about their communities and meet both the filmmakers and people featured in the films. The festival features films made both professional and first-time filmmakers which spotlight people, places, history, and happenings from our local communities. Many of the filmmakers and people featured in the film will be there to answer questions. All of the screenings are free and open to the public (though we strongly recommend getting tickets in advance to guarantee a seat). In addition, we are offering several modestly-priced community filmmaking workshops including one on how to create family legacy videos and another on smartphone filmmaking. Artists & Makers Studios on Parklawn in Rockville is proud to present one three gallery exhibit for the month of November along with artists’ open studios. “Progeny - Figurative sculptures from Melissa Ichiuji’s G u i s e a n d D o ll s classes” brings together the work of Melissa Ichiuji’s students, some who had no fine art experience before attending her class. The dolls were developed through a series of body/mind opening prompts such as movement exercises, journaling, and the inclusion of personal artifacts. Each figure represents a significant turning point, epiphany or event in the makers’ life, and carries a spirit of transcendence and reawakening. In 2015 Melissa Ichiuji gave her first of many figurative sculpture workshops at Artists and Makers Studios. Words out Loud in the Compass Atelier, from 7-8pm with Philip Wexler, Yvette Neisser and Sarah Browning will be followed by an open mic. Resident artists’ open studios will round out the evening for visitors at Parklawn.Artists & Makers Studios 2 on Wilkins Avenue in Rockville will present two exhibits in the main galleries for the month of November. “Alternative Evolution” with Eric Celarier - the series portrays creatures adapted to, from, and by a world irrevocably changed by our interaction. The survival of any living creature is limited by that animal’s ability to keep adaptive pace with a continually mutating habitat. There is no doubt that we have had a significant hand in shaping the environment. Crafting creatures from refuse; the artist lends form to the idea that all future flora and fauna can be seen as byproducts of our existence. “Magic Symmetry” ”  an exhibit with Peter Swift, is the name of a hybrid new genre the artist is exploring, in which photorealistic renderings of objects are arranged in a symmetrical design, often a radial circle.  Symmetry is quite different from the traditional “slice-of-life” or “snapshot” approach, showing the objects on a table-top or in a cabinet, which has been used for centuries in still-life painting. The Montgomery County Camera Club presents “Show Us Your Best Shot” in the hallway gallery, along with exhibits in New Master’s 3rd floor Gallery, and Gallery 209 on the second floor. Arthur Harrison adds acoustic ambience with theremin music in the artists’ lounge and resident artists’ open studios throughout the buildings will round out the evening. [less-]

The Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture presents Objects and Images: Stone Sculptures and Oil Paintings, featuring stone sculptures by James Natali and oil paintings by Sandra Fritter. Natali began his stonework as a laborer working on the construction of Washington National Cathedral. From there, he became an apprentice and then a journeyman stone mason. Natali was a stone “setter,” installing stone and marble on building facades, lobbies, and floors. Wanting to move into stone carving, after retiring he began working with Glen Echo Park’s Sculpture Studio. Sandra Fritter is a plein air and figurative painter. She prefers painting landscapes “in the moment,” rather than from a photograph. Her best work reflects the “dance” that happens when she applies color quickly, catching light and dark, warm and cool.Opening Reception: Saturday, October 28, 6 to 8pmClosing Reception: Saturday, November 18, 6 to 8pmTime: Saturdays and Sundays, 12 - 6pm or by appointment [less-]
