The Culture Center of TECRO will host an exhibition titled “What do you see?” to present three Taiwan young-and-upcoming artists’ works. The exhibition offers a rare opportunity to showcase an avant-garde collection of paintings by Taiwan young artists for viewers from the greater Washington metropolitan area. Admission is free.“What do you see?” is an exhibition that challenges the viewer’s perception of reality by contesting conventions in sight and language. The exhibition will present the selected works of Pei-Shih Tu, Teng-Yuan Chang and Yu-An Liao.Pei-Shih Tu often adopts a narrative filled with fantasies to respond to the conflicts and ridiculous nature of the real world in her works.Teng-Yuan Chang is skilled in deriving artistic inspiration from everyday objects, using painting, comic and animation devices to reflect upon our visual experiences in modern life.Yu-An Liao’s works are often filled with pop and cartoon elements and symbolize various psychological scenarios experienced in modern individual lives. The four-month event is supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of China (Taiwan), the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO), and the Art Bank Taiwan. Curator’s Statement Day of the Dead signifies a time in which communities come together to remember their loved ones—the ways in which that is done varies across traditional lines. To an uneducated public, it has become synonymous with Mexico seen only as candied skulls and skeleton painted faces that are often confused with an offensive Halloween costume. Not only is it experienced differently across Mexico, but it is also celebrated throughout Latin America, dating back to pre-colonization. This exhibition aims to reclaim this holiday that been gentrified, repackaged as décor, and sold in party stores across the United States. The culture, identity and experiences of these artists are not for sale. The artists selected for this exhibition come from a new generation, giving a current perspective of what this time means to them as Latin American artists living in the United States. These artists will express their own perspective of death while also discerning the separation and/or connection with the tradition itself as generations shift, change, and grow. Acknowledging the seeds planted many moons ago by their ancestors, it is through their work that they will bring back the authenticity of Day of the Dead to a space that now includes them.

In 1814, the Quakers built their meeting house in Sandy Spring village. A six-mile radius from the Sandy Spring Meeting House defined that rural community, as this was the farthest members of the Meeting could travel to and from the meeting house by horse or carriage in one day, arriving home before sunset.Today, we can travel farther than six miles in one day and still be home by sunset, but the foundation of a rural community still lies within that day trip. The Countryside Artisans of Maryland, a group of artists that live in the countryside within a day’s drive, brings that rural community back to life. Wind your way through the exhibit and experience this rural way of life and community.image: Blue Mountain by Tina Thieme Brown [less-]

Fabiola Alvarez's installation at VisArts saturates the gallery with color, light, and shimmering evidence that all systems are interdependent. Carefully placed cage-like sculptures woven with metallic ribbon, obsolete technologies, and mirrored surfaces emit and reflect light and color through window and door-like openings. The viewer enters Alvarez's installation and becomes part of her system, "woven" into a relationship between being an insider and an outsider. [less-]

Polkadots: The Cool Kids Musical follows 8-year-old Lily Polkadot who just moved to the “Squares Only” small town of Rockaway. As the first Polkadot in an all Square school, Lily faces an almost impossible task of gaining acceptance from her peers. From daily bullying to segregated drinking fountains, Lily’s quest seems hopeless until she meets Sky, a shy Square boy. Inspired by Civil Rights pioneers Ruby Bridges and The Little Rock Nine, Polkadots: The Cool Kids Musical provides a colorful history lesson for everyone.“Polkadots: The Cool Kids Musical, gives kids a look at not just bullying and inclusion, but more specifically segregation. … The subject matter is heavy but important.” –The Broadway Blog“…none of us should lose sight of the impact of discrimination, including our children. Polkadots: The Cool Kids Musical is fun, vibrant and energetic, but it is also important as a part of this discussion.” – The Broadway Blog“'The Squadot' and its participatory dance get the audience on their feet and feeling like part of the show and the community, which is exactly the point." – The Broadway Blog“...a vivacious musical with characters clad in colorful body paint and costumes singing catchy tunes and leaping about the stage with gusto.” – The Broadway Blog [less-]

Here From You is a group exhibition that emerged from personal reflections on the practice of sending remittances and the oversimplified way in which this very common act is often represented in popular media. In truth, networks of remittance may be as much about maintaining personal and emotional connections across a separation as anything else. This exhibition considers the act of attempting to connect across a separation to be a broadly human experience that can be expressed over physical distance, throughout time, and across generations. The participating artists have all produced work that invite reflections on how distance, movement, and separation manifests in sometimes personal and sometimes very political ways. Here From You features the work of Alexandria Eregbu, Fidencio Fifield-Perez, Rami George, Daniel Haddad Troconis, Gelare Khoshgozaran, and others to be announced soon.
