Gustafer Yellowgold is a funny and touching multimedia performance filled with music, animation, and storytelling. These music and “moving art” shows are performed by Grammy-nominated artist Morgan Taylor. The New York Times proclaimed Gustafer Yellowgold as, “Dr. Seuss meets Yellow Submarine,” and its unique crossover appeal has earned opening act slots for indie stalwarts Wilco and The Polyphonic Spree. The songs are whimsical, super catchy narratives detailing the life of a friendly alien from the sun who now resides in a wildly imaginative version of the woods in Minnesota.

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the City of Gaithersburg and The Latino Art League (TLAL) of Greater Washington DC present an exhibition of multimedia artwork celebrating the group’s diverse talents. The exhibit is on display September 6 through October 28, 2019, at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park.

TLAL celebrates its fifth year exhibiting with the City. The League has a commitment not only to support artists in the DC Latino community, but to build artistic bridges with overseas Latin American communities. Departing from years past, curator Marco Cuba Ricsi has put together a show featuring more contemporary work rather than traditional, cultural work.

Founded in 2015, TLAL has created a variety of opportunities to expose and promote the art of its members, representing a sector of the population that had no specific representation previously. The League’s mission is to work in close partnership with local businesses, galleries, and government and state agencies, with a goal of promoting the development of artistic and cultural activities in their various forms. The vision of TLAL is to become the lead agency in providing the appropriate means for the promotion of Latino art in the metro area, highlighting the diversity of the Latino community through the participation of all its artists.

Please note that all images are copyrighted by the artist and most of the artwork is for sale.

[more+]

Focused on the games, comics, and advertisements which influenced her while she was growing up in Portugal, Elizabeth Casqueiro pays tribute to the joy and passion they generated as well as their telescopic reach into adulthood. Viewing the works in her solo exhibition, Ballyhoo, we come to realize that her abstracted forms are both playful and serious, rendered in the colors of childhood yet shaped by the questioning of an adult mind wondering about innocence lost and asking the question “do we ever really grow up?”

Exciting superhero comic book narratives, with their simplistic dualities of good and evil, remind the artist of the shallow politics of today. The frantic search for advertised treasures in cereal boxes is no different than the quest for greener grass, the perfect bargain, a better standing. Rousing schoolyard games of marbles and jax speak to an all too familiar winner-takes-all market economy.

About the Artist: Elizabeth Casqueiro is a visual artist who was born in England, grew up in Portugal and came to live in the United States, first as a high school exchange student and later as a graduate student. The Washington, DC resident has exhibited her artwork regionally, nationally and internationally. Casqueiro earned a Master of International Business Management from the University of Westminster in London, a Master of Architecture from the Catholic University of America, and a BA in Design from Institute of Art and Design Instituto de Arte e Design in Lisbon, Portugal. [more+]

In a series of assemblages depicting the middle of an unfinished short story, Tom Greaves challenges the viewer to question what is real and what is fake as we consider how our unintentional and perhaps unknown biases shape what we believe to be the truth. In sculptural constructions, from an ongoing series which began in 2016, the Washington, D.C. based artist arranges found and collected objects, images, textiles, plastics, paint and other media to capture frozen moments exploring social, political, economic, cultural, environmental, and other issues in scenes infused with a subversive sense of humor.
In his solo exhibition, Middlemost Daft, Greaves presents selections from three years of work which began as he was preparing to move his studio. Rather than pack up the many objects he had collected, for one reason or another over a period of many years, he started to arrange them in smaller boxes. Greaves was drawn toward the absurd in the creation of this work, likely a response to the changing cultural landscape which made him feel somewhat helpless against the lies, hatred and pettiness coming from those who lead and those who follow. Each piece portrays the turning point in a specific narrative which is meant to challenge our notions of what may or may not be true.

About the Artist: Tom Greaves is a native of Canton, Ohio who graduated from The Art Institute of Pittsburgh with a degree in Visual Communication and completed The Corcoran School of the Arts and Design curriculum for Advanced Figure Sculpture and Advanced Metal Sculpture. His 35-year career as a professional artist has included work in graphic design, illustration, drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Greaves lives in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington, D.C., where he maintains his studio practice, and is currently a member of Sparkplug collective, a 2-year program sponsored by the District of Columbia Arts Center. He has exhibited his work regionally, nationally and internationally. To learn more about the artist, please visit his website:

An exhibit of creative people at work captured in action by professional  photographer Larry Marc Levine.  Mr. Levine is interested in watching people create different forms of art and finds it as fascinating as the creative process itself. For this exhibit, he interviewed and photographed a variety of talented individuals from different backgrounds with experience in different areas including a glass blower, a Native American pow wow dancer, painters, fabric artists, a Chinese zither player, a violin maker, and many others. Most of these creative spirits are from the local Montgomery County area. Levine believes that respect for the individual and appreciation for diversity of people, of ideas, of processes are all important aspects of his photography.  A reception on Sunday, September 15 will feature demonstrations by many of the artists whose portraits will be on exhibit.
