A Brand New, Modern Camp for Grades K - 6 An Experience Unlike Any OtherHighwood's Art Squared summer camp is an engaging, educational, and fun arts experience for any student.  The camp explores applications of the arts in the modern world - how do we use art in the 21st century?  Led by a team of talented, cutting-edge artists, this camp allows students to problem-solve, experience new and unique art forms, and explore through guided play and question-based learning.

ArtBlock Subjects

  • Improv - theatre games and activities focused on communication skills, conflict resolution, creativity, and FUN
  • TheatreFIT - a dance/acting/movement/sports mash-up designed to raise appreciation for an active, healthy life
  • 3D Printing - use easy-to-learn computer software to design, create AND print your own 3D art, new gadgets, or figures
  • Digital Music - use modern technology to create your own music - from composing on a keyboard, to exploring percussion tracks, audio effects
  • Upcycling Art - use found or recycled objects in new ways, whether through fashion, engineering, sculpture, or design
  • Photography - explore the world of photography from staging, shooting, and editing your artistic or realistic photos
Each day begins with a session of TheatreFIT; then, the first two ArtBlocks (each focuses on one of our 21st century art forms).  Every ArtBlock contains instruction, guided exploration, and time for kids to get creative and work with the art form in their own way.  Next is lunch, followed by a daily improv workshop.  Finally, we have the third and fourth ArtBlocks (with snack in between), followed by a closing activity with the whole group. The last day of camp gives students a chance to focus on one of their favorite ArtBlock subjects and create something special to take home. Each class provides a unique experience focused on skill development, fun, and creativity.  Classes are tailored for the specific age group and designed to engage each and every student, whether they have experience in the subject matter or not.  Classes are different each session, so students who sign up for multiple sessions get a completely different experience! The Glen Echo Park Partnership is pleased to present Federico A. Ruiz: Land, Sea & Sky: A Minimalist’s Caribbean. Federico A. Ruiz, a D.C. first responder, gives a fresh perspective on the Caribbean landscape. As a descendant of Dominican immigrants, Ruiz is inspired by the Dominican Republic coast that was near his family’s estate. This body of work hints at his impression of the convergence of land, sea and sky. Relying on color, little to no texture, and geometric shapes, Ruiz is able to convey distinct horizons and nature’s essence. These minimalist paintings find the visual abstract elements of the Dominican Republic’s Caribbean landscape. [less-]

Alice follows the White Rabbit into Wonderland where all of the familiar characters have been transformed into live guitar-toting Rock ‘n’ Roll musicians! She takes advice from a Zen Caterpillar and a wise Cheshire Cat. She has tea with the unwelcoming Mad Hatter, and argues with the childish Tweedledee and Tweedledum. When the vicious diva Red Queen tries to destroy her, Alice fights back only to find herself in a battle of the bands with the Jabberwocky, a many-headed monster who embodies all her fears and insecurities. Alice ultimately outperforms him on keyboard and drums; she is crowned at last, and returns home, a stronger and happier girl. The writers have successfully translated Carroll’s irrational Wonderland to our own times and added lyrics and a beat that will make you want to twist and shout!Book and lyrics by Rachel Rockwell Music and lyrics by Michael Mahler Based on the classics by Lewis Carroll Best for Ages 5+ Rock along with Alice in this contemporary musical take on the classic! #IStageWonderland [less-]

The Glen Echo Park Partnership is pleased to present Jeff Cooper and Rebecca Hirsh: Crossing Paths. This exhibition pairs two-dimensional work by Rebecca Hirsh alongside three-dimensional sculptures by Jeff Cooper. Cooper admires the ever-changing properties of wood – always shrinking or expanding, darkening, lightening, or aging. Rather than carving from one piece of wood, Cooper assembles pieces of wood, combining the grains and figures. His sculptures attract the eye and invite the viewer to examine the details. Originally a painter, Rebecca Hirsh explores the medium of wood for this exhibition. Using what she can salvage from Cooper’s studio, Hirsh constructs her collages by painting the pieces of wood and arranging them. She is inspired by color, shapes, and lines, and how they occupy space. Hirsh’s wood collages and Cooper’s wood sculptures reflect the influence each artist has on the other, truly crossing paths. Gallery B is pleased to present its July exhibition, Saffron and Tea, featuring mixed media paintings by Saya Behnam. The exhibit be on display from July 12 – August 5 at Gallery B, located at 7700 Wisconsin Avenue, Suite E, Bethesda, MD. Gallery hours for the show will be Wednesday – Saturday, 12-6pm. A public reception for the exhibition will be held on Friday, July 14 from 6-8pm.Sayeh “Saya” Behnam is a visual artist with more 20 years of experience. Born in Tehran, Iran, she currently lives and works in her studio in Northern Virginia. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Botany from Tehran University, and has taken several courses at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C. Behnam has exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions throughout the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. area and New York City. Most recently, she has held a solo exhibit at Artist's Proof Gallery in Washington, D.C. In 2015, Behnam was awarded an honorable mention at the HERMES Creative Awards, as well as a Bronze Spotlight Award from LACP.Behnam uses such natural dry mediums as saffron, hibiscus, borage tea, henna and coffee to create her colors. These dried herbs and spices are steeped in hot water until they create the tones that she wishes to use.

As she applies each color layer with Chinese brushes, a chemical interaction with the previous color layer occurs, creating further nuances of delicate tones. This process creates an element of uncertainty with all the possibilities of colors as they mix; yet the artist is in control as well.Additionally, Behnam has extensive experience in digital design and has worked on numerous projects across a range of sectors including government, nonprofit and commercial organizations. From award-winning theatre to independent films, downtown Bethesda’s Arts & Entertainment District is filled with inspiring artists and art venues. The Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District is managed by the Bethesda Urban Partnership, Inc., and is the producer of The Trawick Prize: Bethesda Contemporary Art Awards, Bethesda Painting Awards, Bethesda Fine Arts Festival, Bernard/Ebb Songwriting Awards, Bethesda Film Fest, Play In A Day, and Studio [less-]
