The Culture Center of TECRO will host an exhibition titled “What do you see?” to present three Taiwan young-and-upcoming artists’ works. The exhibition offers a rare opportunity to showcase an avant-garde collection of paintings by Taiwan young artists for viewers from the greater Washington metropolitan area. Admission is free.“What do you see?” is an exhibition that challenges the viewer’s perception of reality by contesting conventions in sight and language. The exhibition will present the selected works of Pei-Shih Tu, Teng-Yuan Chang and Yu-An Liao.Pei-Shih Tu often adopts a narrative filled with fantasies to respond to the conflicts and ridiculous nature of the real world in her works.Teng-Yuan Chang is skilled in deriving artistic inspiration from everyday objects, using painting, comic and animation devices to reflect upon our visual experiences in modern life.Yu-An Liao’s works are often filled with pop and cartoon elements and symbolize various psychological scenarios experienced in modern individual lives. The four-month event is supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of China (Taiwan), the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO), and the Art Bank Taiwan. A new twinkling light shines on all the characters you love including, Wendy, the Lost Boys, Peter Pan, Smee, and the nefarious Hook from a feisty fairy’s point of view.

Print artist Meaghan Busch and fiber artist Annalisa Leonessa combine in this unique show about growth. Busch’s growth is through hard times – from dealing with the mental decline of a parent and becoming a parent. This body of work is bittersweet, embracing hard reality with warm feelings from the past. Her works are wistful and joyful, embracing the duality of adult life. For Leonessa, growth is the process of making each felt piece. Making vessels has become a way to challenge the limits of the felt-making process. Leonessa must plan her work carefully, choosing techniques that allow her to maintain an open dialog between her imaginary ideas and wool’s natural properties. Her vessels are influenced by natural forms and color to evoke impressions of the organic world. Wool has an intrinsic quality of impermanence, common to all textiles, which can also symbolize the status of our own life, and reinforce the pull towards growth and change. [less-]

[less-]
