Four Montgomery County, MD freelance sports photojournalists team up to present their reflections on the stories behind their sporting news images in an exhibit called “Our Moments in Time!”.  The Photo Sports Collaborators, three guys and a lady, are sideline photographers who have been documenting all levels of sports, from the school yard to pro venues, in and about Montgomery County for a variety of publications.  Their selected work together with the living story about the image’s impact are on display at Bohrer Park, in Gaithersburg, Md. from January 18 through March 10, 2019.  An artist reception will be held at Bohrer Park on Saturday, January 26 from 1 to 3PM. Phil Fabrizio, George Smith, Jacqui South and David Wolfe have crossed county venue sidelines and dugouts side by side over the past ten years.  This print project was born out of a desire for a broader exposure of their work as together they faced a continuing decrease in distribution of local printed sports news coverage due in part to today’s online culture.  To them a sports image, the temporary life span as it is in a news cycle, never provides enough true context for its ongoing existence.  Thus, the reflected story behind the image. These four photojournalists images have and continue to be published in newspapers, periodicals and online web services, large and small, that are distributed to readers across the DMV. These include The Montgomery Sentinel, The Town Courier, Montgomery Magazine, The Washington Post, USA Today High School Sports, Montgomery Community Media, Bethesda Beat, The Monocacy Monocle, The Terrapin Times, Maryland Public Secondary School Athletic Association and former periodicals such as the North Potomac Times and The Gazette Newspaper, as well as, countless sports candid images in county high school yearbooks. Their work has been seen and now you can meet them at the artist reception on January 26, 2019 at Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg, MD. In her newest body of work, “Persona Practice,” Melanie Ruston pinpoints intimate moments within different types of human relationships, including one's relationship with oneself.  Often using the human figure, she tells stories about how humans of all ages work hard, communicate, succeed, fail, and try again.  While many of her works are autobiographical, she also draws inspiration from her work as an educator of preschool aged children.  Her research of the Reggio Emilia teaching philosophy led her to the writing of Cesare Musatti, who posited that “A child’s most sought-after goal is to recognize him- or her-self in others,” and that even the development of the youngest child constitutes the “matrix of social life as later developed in adulthood… the foundation for likes and dislikes, for affinities and even for love.” The characters in Ruston’s paintings represent personal and social journeys throughout both childhood and adulthood. In the Jim Henson Foundation Grant awarded “Milo the Magnificent, ”Milo, an aspiring magician – and puppet – will charm kids and adults. Using stunningly innovative puppetry, Milo presents a variety of magic tricks which don’t always go as planned. Each performance runs 45 minutes, and will be followed by a meet and greet with the artists.Great for all ages!AWARDS:2017 Jim Henson Foundation Workshop Grant2017 Greenbelt Community Foundation GrantREVIEWS:“Milo is a bit of a cardboard character, but you can’t blame him for that. He’s a puppet: specifically, a huge cutout fellow, whose arms, hands and feet belong to one of his creators, and whose changing facial expressions are recorded on flippable circular cards. The duo Alex & Olmsted — Alex Vernon and Sarah Olmsted Thomas — invented his world, which includes other puppets made of cleverly repurposed materials. Milo, appearing here as part of the Just Kidding series, aspires to be an illusionist, and while his tricks and experiments rarely work out as planned, children will still find them magical.” – The New York Times“The anchor of The National Puppet Slam, this piece amazed audiences in more ways than one… Performed so masterfully and effectively, the audience is swept away in Milo’s quick changes of expression as he struggles and achieves each feat.” – The Puppetry JournalABOUT ALEX AND OLMSTED:Alex & Olmsted (Alex Vernon and Sarah Olmsted Thomas) has been making puppets since 2010. In recent years, they have performed at the international Puppet Festival Chuncheon in South Korea, the Festival de Casteliers in Montréal, Symphony Space and LaMaMa in New York City, The Puppeteers of America Festival, and two National Puppet Slams. In 2019, they will be performing Milo at the Festival of Wonder in Silkeborg, Denmark and the Festival of Animated Objects in Calgary, Canada. “Milo the Magnificent” was awarded a 2017 Jim Henson Foundation Grant and a Greenbelt Community Foundation Grant and was featured on the front page of the Hartford Courant. Alex & Olmsted are resident artists at Baltimore Theatre Project. They are also proud company members of Happenstance Theater with whom they have created 9 productions since 2012.Unexpected Stage Company is funded by an operating grant from the Maryland State Arts Council, an agency dedicated to cultivating a vibrant cultural community where the arts thrive. The Partnership presents an exhibition of landscape paintings by Julia Purinton. Having evolved from hunter-gatherers, humans learned to think in nature. The devastation of our habitats causes distress and despair, and we naturally find solace in the experience of landscape. Utilizing a familiar vernacular of landscape imagery in her paintings, Purinton explores psychological passage and growth: finding joy, accepting loss, or releasing regret. In the way that fairy tales metaphorically dramatize real life, her paintings illuminate aspects of personal endeavor. Whether the image is a shoreline or a forest, her subject is the importance of nature as a palliative to contemporary social malaise; each piece a meditation on the commonality of human response to the majesty and beauty of the natural world. The Partnership presents an exhibition of sculptural work by Irene Clouthier.  In Clouthier’s work she explores and creates new spaces, environments, strange relationships between scale, objects, backgrounds and the universe that unfold by shifting those elements coming from an existing object or spaceHaving grown up in a hostile environment in a violent city in Mexico, toys and games were an escape. The use of plastic and toys in her work references our own childhood and playfulness, to enact fantasies as a statement about the bubble wrap society we live in, the disposable culture, the loss of sensibility, and the embrace of plastics as the cool material of our emptiness. Her recent sculptural work is an exploration of the complexity of human relationships, love, despair, disappointment, loneliness and feelings of the human condition. She began this exploration after going through a divorce and experimenting with duality and confusion, then it unfolded into exploring just the words, their meaning, and how opposites are also connected, because feelings are always connected. Cloutheir finds playful ways to express herself, transforming and presenting the work in a new context and inviting viewers to reflect on what it means in their own relationships.Opening Reception: Saturday, February 2, 4pm-6pm [less-]
