As Clippinger and Ducore draw inspiration from their gardens and beyond, they strive to capture the delicacy, complexity, and vibrancy found in the plant world. Careful observation of the plant’s botany, color variations, and growth habit are essential. The beauty and nature of each botanical subject are reflected in these plant portraits using watercolor, colored pencil, and graphite.Art Walk & Opening Reception: Friday, June 1, 6 to 8pmDates: June 1 to 30, 2018Time: Monday through Saturday, 10am – 6pm [less-]

[more+]
Join Montgomery History for the fifth and final program in its BOOM Speakers Series as we explore what life was like for persons living in Montgomery County during the 1950s. Eric W. Boyle, Chief Historian for the Department of Energy, will discuss the Atomic Energy Commission’s move to upper Montgomery County during the early days of the Cold War. After considering over 50 locations, farmland near Germantown, Maryland was determined to be a distance far enough from Washington D.C. to survive a nuclear blast from the Soviet Union. Thus, the headquarters for the Atomic Energy Commission was built in Germantown, Maryland in 1957. Today, the site is one of two administrative complexes of the US Department of Energy. In this talk, Boyle will share archival research and new insight on the detailed criteria used to determine the headquarters’ location.
Speaker Bio: Eric W. Boyle became the Chief Historian for the Department of Energy in March 2016. Boyle earned his Ph.D. in the History of Science, Technology and Medicine from the University of California Santa Barbara in 2007. Before joining the Department of Energy, he served as the Chief Archivist at the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Silver Spring, Maryland. He is also a lecturer for University of Maryland’s School of Public Health. [less-]

A Celebration of Community! The Strawberry Festival was first held in June 1982 at the old Montgomery Hospital grounds in Olney, MD. It was created and chaired by Cindy Chirtea as a fundraiser for the museum. It was completely staffed by volunteers and featured many of the same activities as today, including craftspeople, entertainment, games, a plant sale, and food and drinks for sale. It was the only fundraiser for the museum for many years and was supported by local businesses from the very beginning. It had always been held on a Saturday in June and had an estimated 7,000 attendees in 2017.  Starting in 2018, the Festival became a two-day event, to support the growing attendance. The event still retains much of its small-town flavor and volunteers still play a major role in the planning and execution of the festival. Over 200 volunteers help out on the day of the event, many of them high school students who are earning Student Service Learning (SSL) hours. The Strawberry Festival has been around so long it is now a part of the history of the community in its own right and there are several volunteers, Robb Newman being one, who have volunteered for every festival since 1982.Many festival attendees remember coming as children and now they are returning with their own children and grandchildren! The festival is still the largest fundraiser the museum holds. However we like to think of it as a gift to the community, a way for many small local businesses to meet their neighbors, for community residents to discover all that Sandy Spring, MD has to offer, and for local craftspeople to sell their unique products to a huge, excited audience. [more+]
Join Montgomery History for the fifth and final program in its BOOM Speakers Series as we explore what life was like for persons living in Montgomery County during the 1950s.

One of the most popular events of the year at Glen Echo Park, the Festival attracts close to 10,000 visitors. Free to the public and held rain or shine, the Festival features over 450 musicians, storytellers, dancers, and crafters from the greater Washington area. Presented by the Folklore Society of Greater Washington and the Glen Echo Park Partnership, the Washington Folk Festival is a celebration of this region's rich cultural diversity. International performers share the music, dance, and cultural traditions they brought from their original homes while American performers showcase a variety of musical traditions that developed in this country.
Five stages simultaneously present music and dance for a total of nearly 70 hours of live performance. The festival also includes a storytelling stage, dance workshops in the Spanish Ballroom, a craft marketplace in the Bumper Car Pavilion, and many spontaneous picking sessions in the Park’s picnic grove. Stroll through the craft marketplace in the  Bumper Car Pavilion, join a dance workshop in the Spanish Ballroom, go for a ride with a tall tale at the Storytelling Stage, or take a ride on the restored 1921 Denzel carousel. There is something for everyone at the Washington Folk Festival.

Washington Revels Maritime Voices celebrates the lives and legacies of the men and women who worked and maintained our nation’s 19th-century waterways. The placid waters and trails of the C&O Canal will come to life through songs and stories that were heard up and down the C&O, Erie, and other mighty canals when these economic lifelines were the engines that drove American commerce.Make a day of your Canal visit! Maritime Voices will present two full concerts outside the Visitors Center at noon and at 2:00 pm, so there’s plenty of time before or after to walk or bike the trails, catch spectacular views of the falls, and relax along the idyllic canal. Kids can even participate in activities to become C&O Canal Junior Rangers. What better way to enjoy the first weekend of June? [less-]
