January 12 - February 23
In commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the Maryland-Israel Sister State Committee, in partnership with the Bender JCC, the Israeli-American Council, the American Society for Yad Vashem and the Israeli Embassy are proud to present two inspirational exhibitions.

BESA: A Code of Honor
Muslim Albanians who Rescued Jews during the Holocaust

This exhibit, developed and curated by Yad Vashem, is about the ‘Righteous Among the Nations’ – non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust. It is comprised of portraits and text about Muslim families in Albania, who saved Jews during the Holocaust, converging two seemingly opposed worlds. The remarkable assistance afforded to Jews during this time was grounded in BESA, the code of honor which still exists today. This exhibit is on loan from the American Society for Yad Vashem.

In conjunction with

IsraAID: Stories of Courage and Resilience

This exhibit features photographs and stories documenting rescue and relief efforts by Israel for world communities devastated by natural disasters. Photos/resources provided by IsraAID, the Israel Trauma Center and the Israel Defense Forces.

Background

To honor the upcoming 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, Maryland Secretary of State John Wobensmith charged the Maryland-Israel Sister State Committee with the mission of developing a program to pay tribute to Israel by honoring the victims of the Holocaust -- and to deepen ties between Marylanders and Israelis. The impetus for the request was borne out of Governor Larry Hogan's visit to Yad Vashem during his trip to Israel in 2016.

In support of the State of Maryland’s objective to bolster Holocaust education programming, we encourage groups to schedule exhibit tours accompanied by short lectures designed for:

Gaithersburg’s Arts on the Green presents “Life in Color,” an exhibit featuring works by the Metro Washington Chapter of the Colored Pencil Society of America. The exhibit is on display November 22, 2019 through January 27, 2020. The public is invited to meet the artists during a free Artists Reception on Thursday, December 5, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Attendees are also invited to the Baltimore Watercolor Society artist reception, taking place on the same day and time at the adjacent Kentlands Mansion.

The theme for this exhibit is color, which surrounds us and affects our lives, emotions and experiences. Like other fine art media artists, colored pencil artists use color to not only define their own personal experiences but also to draw attention, create mood, and communicate information to the viewer. Artistic compositions may include people, places, nature, everyday objects, or abstract interpretations. Ordinary things can be turned into extraordinary works of art through the artist’s interpretation of color. This exhibit will also feature the ceramics of Sharon Jacobs.

The Metro Washington Chapter of the national Colored Pencil Society of America (CPSA) formed in 1994. Now with more than 50 members, the group’s goals parallel, on a regional basis, those of the national organization. The Society promotes the stature and awareness of colored pencil as a viable art form to professional art establishments and to the general public and provides a forum for education, communication, and recognition of colored pencil artists. Member artwork is shown in juried & non-juried exhibitions in a variety of venues in the metro region. Learn more at www.cpsa109.org.

Allen Bentley, a well-known figure painter and colorist who is an Adjunct Professor of Art at Montgomery College, juried this exhibit. He has exhibited nationally from coast to coast.

Please note that some of the artwork is for sale and all images are copyrighted by the artists.

[more+]

For the month of January and the Winter season, a special wintry treat for nature lovers and art lovers, the latest Winter landscapes of established artist Vian Borchert are now on exhibit at the Framer's Choice Gallery's display window. In the Winter paintings such as "Winter Woods", "Crisp" and "Fast Snow", Borchert sought to show the audience not only her love for Winter landscapes but the feeling of being surrounded within a Winter wonderland atmosphere from a walk in the woods in a freshly snowed in landscape while the sun casts its rays upon the white snow, and shadows of the barren trees cast shades all over the thick white snow. The artist says, "living by the woods and observing the seasonal changes and its affect on nature have had for a very long time inspired me in my artwork creation. This Winter, I wanted the landscapes to transport the viewer to the whimsical feel of Winter Wonderland."  The Winter paintings are executed with an impressionist touch and the artist's signature painterly abstracted style. The "Winter Woods" and "Crisp" paintings are rather large where the intention is for the viewer to feel as if they are on a leisurely walk in a snowy woodsy wintry landscape with fresh clean crisp air and pretty untouched snow. The artist aims through "Winter Woods" to give feelings of being one in nature surrounded by the grandeur of the Winter season.

The Framer's Choice gallery is open daily and is free to the public.
Framer's Choice Gallery is located in Kentlands in Gaithersburg at:
402 Main Street
Gaithersburg, MD 20878

Gallery Hours:
Monday - Friday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM
