Gaithersburg’s Arts on the Green presents “Black and White,” an exhibit featuring works in drawing, painting, photography, and sculpture in black and white, as juried by Arts Barn resident artist Jaree Donnelly. The exhibit is on display at the Arts Barn, from April 5 to May 12, 2019. This exhibit features sculptures, glass items, and ceramics in the three-dimensional realm, with paintings, drawings, prints and photographs gracing the gallery walls.

Featured artists include Astrid Adler, Michael Adler, Judy Anderson, Mary Paul Barnaby, Michael Brown, Rosanne DeShelter, Jaree Donnelly, Nina Graybill, Don James, Michael Kuchinsky, Andrea McCluskey, Kirke Martin, Janet Matthews, Carol Moore, Laurie Wilson-Niswander, Linda Orenstein, Bobby Pestronk, Kelly Phebus, James Russell, Ruth Sentelle, Josh Shelley, Katherine Thomas, Pamela Townsend, James Vissari, Carol Walsh, Richard Wieblinger, and Ned Wolff.

There are two ways to participate. One is to submit a line drawing photo of yourself by using the “Sketch Me!” app (see attachment for sharable instructions). All images sent to the museum will be included in a giant community mural. Museum visitors can also participate by coloring a communal mural made up of black and white images of iconic locations in and around Sandy Spring. This visual dialogue invites visitors to explore the artist that resides in each of us and illustrate their unique place in the Sandy Spring community.

Through these activities and two galleries of paintings and sculptures, the artists explore the interwoven quality of the community in this multi-dimensional exhibit. Their works are intended to remind us of the complexity within each of us and the unity that is achieved as we knit ourselves into a larger organism - our surrounding community.

The public is invited to meet the artists during a free Artists Reception on Sunday, April 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. Artists and guests will have an opportunity to enjoy an associated lecture and demonstration on Old Hollywood Style Portraits, presented by Donnelly. Registration, available online, is required for the lecture and demonstration.

Stripped of color, the high contract and boldness of black and white artwork is appealing to the eye, allowing the viewer to enjoy the beauty of the spatial, compositional and formal elements in the work as well as the emotional content that may be present. This exhibit features sculptures, glass items, and ceramics in the three-dimensional realm, with paintings, drawings, prints and photographs gracing the gallery walls.

Featured artists include Astrid Adler, Michael Adler, Judy Anderson, Mary Paul Barnaby, Michael Brown, Rosanne DeShelter, Jaree Donnelly, Nina Graybill, Don James, Michael Kuchinsky, Andrea McCluskey, Kirke Martin, Janet Matthews, Carol Moore, Laurie Wilson-Niswander, Linda Orenstein, Bobby Pestronk, Kelly Phebus, James Russell, Ruth Sentelle, Josh Shelley, Katherine Thomas, Pamela Townsend, James Vissari, Carol Walsh, Richard Wieblinger, and Ned Wolff.

Please note that some of the artwork is for sale and all images are copyrighted by the artists.
