Jenna Wright’s work starts with the “home” and the dense suburban environment of her native New Jersey. The Northeast’s landscape has been altered and sculpted by residential living and greatly differs from the relative openness of the American West. Texas provided the contrast to assess her suburban surroundings in a broader way. The molding of an individual, the formation (interior/exterior) of a home, and the shaping of a landscape all have common ideals in our society, to which she is drawn.  Wright explores how conventional social pressures impact our understanding of home and domestic comforts. Arts on the Green and the Gaithersburg Fine Arts Association (GFAA) present a collection of multimedia works at the 31st Annual Juried Art Exhibition at Kentlands Mansion April 21 through July 7, 2017. The public is invited to meet the artists at a free reception and awards ceremony on Thursday, April 27 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The GFAA provides a forum for members to collaborate on activities that expand on their individual artistic backgrounds. The group provides educational programs, promotional opportunities and outreach to local audiences and the broader artistic community, and holds multiple exhibits during the year throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Founded in 1970, the GFAA has grown to more than 80 members, many of whom regularly exhibit their work, actively teach, or contribute to Montgomery County arts events. The group’s limited scope allows for intense dedication to the classical mediums of the arts. Members work in drawing media, oil, watercolor, acrylic, tempera, and the graphic arts. More information can be found at www.gaithersburgfinearts.org. Located at 320 Kent Square Road, the Mansion Gallery offers the opportunity to view art in the beautiful, timeless setting of historic Kentlands Mansion.  Gaithersburg’s Arts on the Green presents “Modern Surrealists,” an exhibit featuring the works of Marco Cuba-Ricsi, John Duke and Thomas Germer  from May 5 through July 4, 2017.  These three gifted artists take their viewers into other realms through their work, skillfully mixing reality and the dream world.  The gallery is located in the Arts Barn at 311 Kent Square Road, with viewing hours Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. The public is invited to meet the artists during a free Artists Reception on Thursday, May 18 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Marco Cuba-Ricsi is a multidisciplinary artist. His work is based on a mix of subjective surrealism bordering abstraction, with the continued use of symbolism in most of his paintings. He likes to work with subliminal messages through figures and forms that draw the viewer to delve into the inner world of the artist. Using a refined technique, Cuba-Ricsi achieves a harmonious combination of light and shadows that intermingle with the figures. Cuba- Ricsi is president and founder of THE LATINO ART LEAGUE of GREATER WASHINGTON DC, as well as a member of various associations and local art leagues. He is also an activist and art advocate, self-taught photographer, writer, freelance graphic designer and instructor.  His work has been published and exhibited nationally and internationally and may be found in both in private and public collections.  More information may be found at www.cubaricsi.comJohn C. Duke is an oil painter whose highly detailed surreal images focus on the themes of the world's delicate environment and this country's crumbling infrastructure. His dream-like images frequently possess a solitary feel that feature human or animal subjects placed in man-made environments of decay or deterioration. For many years, Duke has been fascinated by differing textures. He has made a point of photographing old brick buildings, cracked cement walls, and dilapidated stairwells as reference material--all of which become perfect backdrops for his unique and thought-provoking surrealistic paintings. Thomas A. Germer has always been interested in photography and optics. As a career physicist, he specializes in studying how light interacts with materials and how one can learn about a material by the way it reflects or transmits light as a function of wavelength, direction, or polarization. As a photographic artist, he likes to explore how lighting, color, and perspective affect how we perceive objects. Germer views the world with a unique sense of humor and, using his experience in physics and optics, he tries to put what he sees in an interesting perspective. Viewing an object from a different vantage point gives us a different perspective, and often makes the object into something different than what we normally think of it as. Mixing two dissimilar and contrasting subjects in one image is a means to express drama, humor, and/or irony, and he likes to explore this aspect of photography.   More information may be found at www.tagermer.com. Amanda Burnham makes outsized wall drawings of cities culled (usually) from piles of paper scraps. Cities interest her as teeming containers for everything. She admires the adaptive sensibility of tinkerers, patchers, foragers, and those who make-do, like a friend who keeps bees in a 12’ x 12’ back yard, or my neighbors who know that the empty “mint house” down the street is a great source for all their spearmint needs. A conjoined block of back porches, cellular in appearance, but as various as its inhabitants, is her favorite view. Cities like this are worth aspiring to.  When she tears drawings down, the parts get stuffed into bags for eventual reuse in later drawings. A bank of rowhomes becomes a teetering television antenna, or a moveable type sign becomes a sidewalk. She values tape as both an adhesive and as a line. She rarely pictures people in her constructions, but people are not absent. Architecture interests her the moment it becomes humanized. [less-]

The National Capital Trolley Museum commemorates Memorial Day with a special exhibit, Homefront Street Cars, and presentation of two World War II era films produced by transit companies.Ken Rucker, Museum Director of Administration, explains, “The challenges that total war offered transit companies across the Nation were enormous.  Suddenly, rationing of gasoline and rubber made use of private automobiles impossible for many citizens while the demand for labor in war related industries grew rapidly.  Particularly in Washington, D.C., employment growth altered its culture and spawned its phenomenal growth.  Native Washingtonians and newcomers packed the street cars and buses of the Capital Transit Company, as did war workers elsewhere.” The special exhibit, Homefront Street Cars, recalls the impact of the War on the men and women of the Capital Transit Company who supported the efforts of the armed forces with their labor.  Trying to meet passenger demand with limited resources, the Company produced Tilley the Trolley and Billy the Bus to encourage patrons to use its services effectively.  Kansas City Public Service created Ten Seconds to Go to persuade its employees to improve their work performance during the national emergency.  During Memorial Day Weekend, Museum visitors may step back to the homefront with these films: Tilley the Trolley and Billy the Bus shown at 12:50 p.m. and 2:10 p.m.; Ten Seconds to Go shown at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.  [less-]

Mowgli is a human child brought up in the jungles of India by a family of wolves. The embittered tiger Shere Kahn may be stalking him, but Mowgli is a quick learner. His friends, Baloo the goofy bear, and Bagheera, the savvy Jaguar, teach him how to gain the trust of the four-footed hunters, the birds, and the snakes so that he will never be friendless. He falls into a bad crowd of silly monkeys who lead him astray and play a mean trick on him. How will Mowgli escape from the deep, dark well? And, how will he save himself when Shere Kahn turns the wolf pack against him? Kipling’s timeless classic deals with very timely issues in this lively new version. Mowgli learns to respect his environment and the wisdom of the animals. And, he realizes that, as a grown man, it’s his responsibility to protect them.By Greg Banks Based on the story by Rudyard Kipling Best for Ages 4+ Swing through the jungle with Mowgli and friends! #IStageJungleBook [less-]
