Love to Susan – Updated

I know that our fellow parent in Silver Spring, Susan Niebur, is in so many of our hearts right now.

She is all I can think about, making fluffy fun posts suggesting children’s activities almost impossible at the moment. The suggestions I have for you are to

Read Susan’s words

Send her your love

(Send her best friend some love too)

Take your kids to a planetarium or other space/sky-themed field trip in honor of Susan’s life work as a planetary scientist. (That post I am linking to there is woefully old, written in April 2010, but I hope it provides some good links to spark an updated online search.)

Immerse yourself in two of the glorious online communities and websites Susan has founded, Mothers With Cancer and Women in Planetary Science

Pray.

Susan is the praying kind.

UPDATED to add:

If you would like to send a card of love or encouragement to Susan, the family has opened a post office box expressly to receive those kind expressions. That P.O. box is

Susan and Curt Niebur
11006 Veirs Mill Rd, Ste. L-15 #112

Please feel free to share.

And thanks to Janice D’Acy of The Washington Post’s On Parenting blog for her thoughtful post about Susan and the love Susan has received over the Internet.

Eric Allen for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Man and Woman of the Year

Fellow parent in Silver Spring Eric Allen is a 13-year cancer survivor. After chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, he has been cancer-free since 1998. And now (with the help of his wife Savena and their two kindergarten-age daughters) he has taken up the challenge to raise $113,000 for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) and the goal of eradicating cancer!

You can make a donation to Eric’s page in order to help his reach his fundraising goals (100% of all funds go directly to LLS cancer research and advocacy!).

UPDATE: Family Fun Day at Meadowbrook Park (aka Candy Cane City) has been cancelled due to an unexpected death in the family.

Not only is the Allen family taking up a noble cause, they’re also producing entertaining videos to spread their cancer-fighting message!
