All three artists were selected by a review panel and received a free studio space for four months to develop project proposals that focused on social practice, community art, and/or performance. The nature of their projects required a dynamic mix of research, collaboration, physical construction, and public interaction. From textile and stitch works that poetically connect to the history of Rockville, to a collection of floatation devices used as catalysts for conversations, to a dynamic intermedia installation that includes a large-scale Kaiserpanorama to focus on endangered and extinct bird species, the work of this year’s Bresler Resident artists is not only brilliantly inventive, but socially and environmentally aware.Katie Kehoe: Provisions for BuoyancyKrista Caballero: Birding the FutureJanuary 12 – February 18, 2018Kaplan Gallery, VisArts, 2nd floor Maria-Theresa Fernandes: The Fabric of PlaceJanuary 12 – February 11, 2018Concourse Gallery, VisArts, 2nd floorOpening reception and artist talks: Friday, January 19, 7 – 9 PM [less-]

Cathy Abramson's oil paintings investigate the stories of the city in “Cityscapes.” These representational paintings examine the emotional subtext of change and the connections or estrangement of people in transitional neighborhoods. She sees moments of poetry in the ordinary. Capturing those moments highlights the joys and frustrations of the urban rhythm and the vitality of contemporary life. The paintings in this exhibit are based on scenes in Washington, DC, Baltimore and Bethesda. Abramson's focus is on the narrative of change, the change in people's lives in the city and the changing facade of the urban landscape. [less-]

The Gaithersburg Community Museum is delighted to host The Artifacts of Outlander, a traveling exhibit from the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory (MAC Lab), part of Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum (JPPM). The exhibit, on display March 3, draws comparisons between the material culture of Maryland in the 1740’s, and that of Scotland at the same time, as depicted in the popular Starz television series. By 1740, Maryland had been a colony for more than 100 years and would soon join the struggle to overthrow English rule. Artifacts of Outlander explores the everyday life of colonial Marylanders through the historical and archaeological record. The Gaithersburg Community Museum... is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free. Visit www.gaithersburgmd.gov or call 301-258-6160 for more information. The MAC Lab is a State-owned facility serving as the primary repository for collections excavated in Maryland. Artifacts come to the MAC Lab from every part of the state, and many of the most impressive assemblages date to the 18th century. For this traveling exhibit, some favorite finds from colonial Maryland collections have been taken out of storage so visitors can see how they compare to those in 18th-century Scotland. The display features horse tack, drinking glasses, firearms, clothing fasteners, wig hair curlers, and rare organic survivals such as 18th-century corks and leather. Period dramas often need to take creative license with sets and costumes in order to facilitate the filming process, and while these compromises can frustrate history buffs looking for a 100% realistic depiction of the past, Maryland’s artifacts prove that much of the material in Outlander is remarkably accurate.Since it’s opening in 2015, the Artifacts of Outlander has been traveling to regional libraries and museums in Maryland, educating people about the unique resources at JPPM and the MAC Lab. Starz has been supportive of this exhibit that allows local museums to tap into public enthusiasm for the series to help promote Maryland’s archaeological collections. For more information on the exhibit visit http://www.jefpat.org/outlander.html. [less-]

National Philharmonic ChoralePiotr Gajewski, conductorDebussy La MerHolst The PlanetsJourney through a stunning multimedia presentation featuring original NASA footage of our solar system, explore exhibits about the latest NASA discoveries and missions, and engage in conversation with Goddard scientists and engineers about their cutting-edge work.Cosmic imagery is used to great effect in one of the greatest masterpieces of the orchestral repertoire. Gustav Holst’s The Planets creates a powerful musical astrological chart as it takes the audience on a space voyage teeming with intriguing sonorities. The broad canvas of The Planets is juxtaposed with Debussy’s symphonic poem La Mer, undoubtedly the greatest depiction of the power and shifting moods of the mighty ocean. From Holst’s interspatial fantasy to a musical celebration of the beautiful and terrifying power of the sea, this concert features two of the most enduring works of the 20th century. [less-]

Gathering at an Irish Pub for a bit of singing gives us the perfect excuse to dabble in celebratory song — we’ll sing glass-raising strains from many cultures led by our Pub Sing song leaders Steve Winick and Jennifer Cutting! Dust off your vocal chords and get ready to join in on rollicking tunes from England, Ireland, Scotland, Québec, and other cultures from around the globe.Find us again at the traditional Irish pub and restaurant that has hosted our January Pub Sings for the past 10 years: McGinty’s Public House in Silver Spring!Head to the second-floor bar area and follow the sounds of good cheer. Food and drinks may be ordered beginning at 6:00 pm. Singing will begin at 7:00 pm and formally end at 9:00 pm, with a brief intermission. All songs will be sing-alongs, with song sheets and song leaders provided. Kids and teens are welcome — there may be a song or two that celebrate the virtue of drink, but not many. To ensure that Pub Sing participants of all ages enjoy the evening fully, we ask that parents please be prepared to actively supervise kids under the age of 13.
Admission may be available at the door, but we strongly recommend that you purchase your tickets in advance online (no fees!) because seating is limited and we regularly sell out in advance. Ticket proceeds go entirely to Washington Revels; food and beverage may be ordered separately from the McGinty’s regular menu at your expense.

[less-]

Aishol-pan, a 13-year-old girl, trains to become the first female in 12 generations of her Kazakh family to become an eagle hunter and rises to the pinnacle of a tradition that has been handed down from father to son for centuries. While there are many old Kazakh eagle hunters who vehemently reject the idea of any female taking part in their ancient tradition, Aisholpan’s father, Nurgaiv, believes that a girl can do anything a boy can, as long as she’s determined. This evening’s program is sponsored by the Women’s Alliance for Democracy and Justice.
