I have tried everything. I have purchased the whitening strips, special toothpaste, even whitening pens in which you draw onto your teeth with bleach. My mouthwash, dental floss and the chewing gum in my purse all sport claims of whitening abilities. I have even ponied up for the special molded whitening trays from a dentist in which you squirt whitening solution.
And still, my smile betrays that I am a late-thirties mom who loves coffee and Diet Coke during the day, and red wine at night. The slowly increasing yellowing is making me look older, less sparkling, and is driving me crazy.
I have dreamed for years of springing for the fancy, high tech in-house whitening procedure at the dentist’s office. The one where you walk in with yellow teeth and walk out with a bright white movie star smile. But at upwards of six-hundred dollars for the procedure, I have not been able to justify the expense.
Even though I have the molded-to-my-bite trays, I can never find a spare 45 minutes in which I can pop them in, it seems. If the kids are awake, I need to be talking to them, and the stinging on my gums and drool that drips down my face (sorry for that gnarly imagery) drives me crazy.

The top photo is close to the current color of my teeth, ugh. The bottom photo is what I'm aiming for.
Now I am just going to waltz into Appalachian Dental and have them whiten my teeth in one fell swoop!
Appalachian Dental is a full-service dental clinic in Fairfax, Virginia that has been recognized and certified by the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, The Academy of General Dentistry, and the American Dental Association. Whiter teeth in one office visit - I'm so stoked!
My smile is something I am proud of — my parents paid for braces (thank you!) and I suffered through headaches, head gears and a mouth full of metal for two and half years. My smile is something everyone, every day sees of my appearance. I can pull on a pair of Spanx to try and slim my post-baby midsection, I can choose outfits which camouflage or downplay the parts of my bod which are not my best features.
But I can’t hide my smile.
So even though a tummy tuck, boob lift or other major body overhaul are not in my immediate future, I am excited to hop onto the Beltway over to Appalachian Dental to overhaul my yellow smile.

Fire Station 1 Restaurant and Brewing Co. is one of family’s and my favorite restaurants. It strikes the perfect balance of cool brewery restaurant for adults, and fireman rescue hero dream for the kids.
Mom and Dad get low-priced, quality beer on tap like Hook & Ladder, some of the best crab cakes and french fries in the DC area (from the Examiner’s restaurant review, “Is there a such thing as a perfect french fry? This one is up there…”) and $8 lunch specials.
It’s a place where $40 will go a long way…made even sweeter by the fact that $40 here will cost you just $20 right now on Plum District!
The restaurant is also a built-in history lesson for the children. Right across the street from the B&O train station and the current, modern fire station facility, the restaurant is housed in the historic Silver Spring National Guard Armory. The Armory was converted to the first Silver Spring fire house in 1919 and the firehouse themed restaurant is even owned by a retired Montgomery County firefighter. Inside, the official fire station decor, as well as the coloring pages and Wikki Stix that the servers will bring your kids, will keep them happily entertained until their food arrives.
The Jr. Firefighters menu is also well-priced and, if you can believe it, healthy. All items are freshly made, as far as I can tell (we’ve had almost all the items on the kids menu over the course of our visits). The default side order to your little one’s handmade mac-n-cheese or 4 oz. (non-frozen) angus burger is steamed broccoli “trees”, although you can instead request those perfect french fries for your little Master or Miss Potato Head.
My kids cheer when we take them here for dinner or a weekend lunch. And I will confess: we eat out a lot and they have become restaurant snobs. They find this place super entertaining and clean their plates, and Chris and I love that the kids are entertained by history rather than video games or other kid restaurant cheesiness.
For fun date nights: If you’re a poker person, there’s free Texas Hold’em every Monday, and trivia nights are on Wednesdays. Happy Hour is Monday-Friday from 3-7pm, with $3 Drafts, $5 Martinis, 1/2 Price J Lohr Wines and 50-cent wings.
Disclosure: Plum District is an advertising partner of A Parent in Silver Spring and they have gifted me this deal for my family. However, I agreed to this sponsored post because we have patronized this restaurant several times on our own dime and thus all opinions expressed are my own.

Thanks for the sweet "new" ride Mama! - Charlie in his fav consignment sale find, 2004
THIS WEEKEND
University Park Co-Op Annual Spring Children’s Clothing and Toy Sale this Saturday April 2 from 10am – 12pm at the Riverside Presbyterian Church in University Park, MD.
University Park is just half a mile from downtown Silver Spring, right across the PG/MoCo border. The church is located at 6513 Queens Chapel Rd, University Park, MD, 20782.
This sale only lasts for two hours and then the stuff is gone – it’s THAT good. Be sure to note that the sale is cash only.
Thrift Store Mama advises that there are two different playgrounds within a two minute walk of the church where the sale is being held, and Downtown College Park and the College Park Aviation Museum are just 4-7 minute drives north of the church. Her insider recommendation: Bring the entire family, sure, but have Dad take the kids to the playground while Mom shops, or vice versa, since it can get pretty overstimulating inside.
Please Like A Parent in Silver Spring on Facebook – there’s a new Facebook page with the latest and greatest happenings in the area!

I’m sure I missed your favorite one! I could go on and on and on…there are just so many free, educational, incredible opportunities to be found in the DC-area. Which is why I started this little old blog. Three and a half years of almost daily posts, and I still have only touched the tip of the iceberg.
And sponsored posts, like this partnership with Tony’s Pizza, make the free writing I provide on A Parent in Silver Spring a little easier to keep on doing.
Soooo, don’t forget that at the website
