Getting More Out of the Family Budget and GIVEAWAY: Tony’s Pizza & Children’s Books

A couple weeks ago I wrote about how I’m giving up ordering delivery pizza for my family because it tastes just like frozen pizza. Heck, at a lot of pizza places it *is* frozen pizza, they just used their own ovens.

The only thing my kids miss is the fun game of looking out the window to spot the pizza man’s car.

(Hint: It’s the one with the plastic triangle on the roof that turns into your driveway!)

This change is seriously saving us a lot of cash. Our usual delivery pizza order for a family of four (two adults, two young-elementary kids) + tip for the driver used to cost about $20. And we used to order pizza twice a month. And we all probably ate more than we needed to, just because it was there.

Instead, I’ve been picking up a couple two-serving Tony’s pizzas for Friday night pizza nights at the house.

They cost $1.50 each. We each eat a couple of those square slices – the recommended serving size on the box.

That means I’ve just saved my family a bunch of calories and our budget about $34 bucks a month.

That’s more than $400 a year.

Yup, I’m getting more.

What I’m not getting? All the cool prizes you can win with the Tony’s Pizza’s 99 Days of More promotion, since I’m one of their mom blog ambassadors and ineligible to win. But you sure can! Every day for 99 Days, Tony’s Pizza is giving away $500 VISA gift cards, Nintendo Wii games, iTunes gift cards and of course, loads of free pizza  – more than 100 prizes every day. You can win every day until April 9! Just go here daily and pop your email addy in the box.
How to Win This Giveaway

What are some of your savvy savings tips? Put them in the comments below and one randomly-drawn commenter will receive a full value coupon for any Tony’s Pizza product, and three commenters will win a copy of the children’s book Tony and the Pizza Champions.

The pizza coupon is thanks to the good Tony’s peeps, of course.

The three kids’ books were my idea and will be my gift to three of you guys. I guess all that prize giving by Tony’s rubbed off on me.

So leave a comment on how you save cash for your family – heck, leave as many comments as you want for  more giveaway entries!
The winners will be drawn on Sunday March 13 at midnight.

I know there are more ways to cut excess from the family budget, so let’s help each other out!

Tony’s Pizza Instead of Delivery & Prizes for You

I’m done with ordering pizza to be delivered. It’s totally a waste of cash, often arrives cold and burnt and tastes no different than a good-quality frozen pizza.

I’ve been burned (pun intended) this year by Domino’s, Papa Johns and Pizza Hut. Never again.

And one night last week right when I was ranting to my husband about how bad delivery pizza was lately, I received the request to be a Tony’s Pizza brand ambassador in my in-box.

So I went out and bought a couple from the grocery store before signing on to the campaign. I know I’ve bought Tony’s Pizzas before, but I wanted to make sure they were good.

They were. Charlie and Eve thought they were better than Domino’s…that lovely franchise that I’ve been dumping hundreds of dollars for not-so-great-pizza when I’m too tired to cook for years. Chris and I gobbled them up too, adding a little vino (for Chris) and a green salad (for pregnant me) to the side while we caught up on our DVR. It was a great dinner for all.

Sold.

However, ordering a pizza and paying the delivery man is fun. Which is why after popping a Tony’s Pizza in the oven, I’m now going to stick it in a cardboard box, throw on a baseball cap, go outside and ring the doorbell. Charlie can practice counting money and tipping from cash in his piggy bank.

How’s that for a money-saving tip to get more value from a family budget? Stop ordering delivery pizza AND take your kids’ birthday money!

Tony’s Pizza also has this cool new promotion going on, called Tony’s Pizza’s 99 Days of More. Every day for 99 Days, Tony’s Pizza is giving away $500 VISA gift cards, Nintendo Wii games, iTunes gift cards and of course, loads of free pizza  – more than 100 prizes every day.

Now, since I’m one of the Tony’s Pizza mom blog ambassadors, I’m ineligible to win those cool prizes. But you can win every day until April 9! Just go here daily and pop your email addy in the box.

BYOB Restaurants in the Washington, D.C. Area: No Corkage Fee!

Did you know that you can bring your own bottle of wine into some restaurants in Washington, D.C., Silver Spring, Arlington, Bethesda and other towns in our area? And that at many of them, you do not have to pay a corkage fee? And others have a corkage fee of only $3-5?

Well, now you know! And you can find the ones nearest your house using the handy-dandy restaurant finder, ReserveYourNight.com, brought to us by those nice Australians at Yellow Tail Reserve wine.

Oh, yes. Not only do those kangaroo loving-vintners bring us drinkable wine for a good price, NOW they’re teaching us how we can pick up a bottle at our local wine store for the same price as the by-the-glass price at the restaurants…and then tote that bottle with us when we go out to dinner. Genius!

So if like me and my husband, you like to have a glass or two of wine when out on a date, but you’d like to save some cash for, I don’t know, paying the sitter, preschool tuition, fixing the leaky roof, COLLEGE, I hope you’ll agree that this online resource is AWESOME.

You can search the BYOB database here, then go to the right-hand navigation and click Washington DC/Baltimore, and then enter your zipcode, proximity to your area, the amount you’re willing to spend on corkage fees and other search criteria.

Here are some area restaurants that according to ReserveYourNight.com, allow you to BYOB with no corkage fee. (Note: I called to verify all of these places and spoke with the managers, but I also spoke to some places listed at ReserveYourNight.com with a staff member who answered was not sure about the restaurant policy or their liquor license has changed. So I would call the places you find via search at ReserveYourNight before you BYOB that box of Franzia.)

I also found some fabulous-looking restaurants with corkage fees listed at $3, $5 and fancy-schmancy ones with a $10 corkage fee that would be completely worth it (you know, places with by-the-bottle prices of no less than $30).

But these places below?  I called them myself and the owners said to bring it on, and bring it in FOR FREE!
