I provided half of the content of The Washington Post Weekend cover story on Friday, reviewing and recommending great outing options to share with your kids this last month of summer. Although most camps are out, there’s still loads of fun things to see and do! Going Out Guru Justin Rude also gives reviews on Monday-Friday happy hours to which you can bring the kids.
Summer. Just the mention of it elicits fond memories of long days spent with friends dashing through sprinklers and catching fireflies. But let’s face it: Among parents, summer — particularly those last weeks after camp is over and school hasn’t begun — also means a hazy, crazy dash between play dates and babysitters.
Olney’s National Night Out is next Tuesday, August 3rd, on the grounds of Montgomery General Hospital from 5pm – 8pm.
The National Night Out is a time when the community comes together to highlight crime prevention and police awareness.
Drama Kids, a great local drama program with camps and classes for kids, will be there promoting self confidence and high self esteem in children. According to child safety experts, a strong sense of self can be a big factor in helping kids stay safe and keeping them from being victimized.
Other family activities at Olney’s National Night Out (which is for the entire area – Silver Spring, Rockville, Bethesda, GBurg – you name it!) include
exhibits from local police and fire departments
kids’ games
family-friendly music performances
food (aka night off from the kitchen, woot woot!)
raffles and goodies from local businesses
safety resources for families from law enforcement like kids’ fingerprinting and ID kits
What a great way to combine safety and summer fun – see you there!
Joining Sarah, Amy and Emily are Court Yard Hounds (aka sisters Martie and Emily of The Dixie Chicks), and other indie 90s icons Beth Orton and Cat Power. Newer female artists on the line-up are Missy Higgins, Sara Bareilles, Nneka, Lissie, Jesca Hoop (Tom Waits says of Jesca “Her music is like going swimming in a lake at night”). Fab collaboration Chairlift has two male band members but apparently Lilith’s mellowing in its old age.
And just like back in the day, the 2010 Lilith Tour is contributing profits from the concert series to good works. $1 from every ticket sold will be donated to the [i4c] Campaign – an initiative to build a responsible economy.
Want to win two free lawn tickets to see all these music greats? There are TWO chances to win: The 9:30 Club and Merriweather Post Pavilion is sending two lucky A Parent in Silver Spring readers and their guests to the show!
To enter, just leave a comment with your favorite lyrics from any song by any artist that’s played at any Lilith Fair.
You can also receive extra entries in the drawing if you
Winners will be randomly drawn on Monday July 19 at 8pm. Tickets are non-transferable and winners will require an I.D. for pick-up at Will Call on August 3rd.
Here’s some lyrics I love by Sinéad Lohan, who appeared on the 1999 tour:
whatever it takes you to believe it
that’s all right with me
take this morning say it walks on water
whatever that helps you to believe
If you’re at a lyrics loss, I bet you know the words to this little ditty:
Love and luck to all! (Now, where did I store my Docs?)
Disclosure: No compensation in any form was received by the author for this post. All my ’90s Lilith Fair tickets and countless alternative chick CDs were paid for by my parents’ kind college text book allowance or my first meager salary. However those Jewel, Paula Cole and Shawn Colvin CDs? Don’t look at me–my husband bought those. Thanks to 9:30 Club and Merriweather Post Pavilion for the prizes for readers.

Rocknoceros is the regular performer on Thursdays here, but sometimes other acts like The Great Zucchini will substitute for them. And you can print this image for a free kids’ cupcake (with purchase of a regular adult cupcake) from Sweetz Bakery, located right next to the concert.
