Perfect Post Award to Leticia/Tech Savvy Mama

It’s no secret that I love Leticia aka Tech Savvy Mama aka Being Savvy’s DC City Editor. She’s my friend in real life, the best source of info on children’s education and technology that I’ve ever met, has her finger on the pulse of DC and is one hell of a writer.

Leticia’s personal essays on DC Metro Moms are always introspective and inspiring, but Finding My Way in Preschool particularly resonated with me. Probably because before all the other hats this amazing woman wears, her primo cap is emblazoned MOM, and her fierce love for her child shines through in this piece. You’ve got to read it. Here’s an excerpt:

Finding My Way in Preschool by Leticia/Tech Savvy Mama
When all the other kids ran into their classrooms, she hung back, hesitating before breaking into tears. It broke my heart to see her cry and I learned that even though I wanted to cry with her, I had to be strong and tell her it would be ok. And eventually it was. Especially when there was chocolate waiting in the car for her at the end of the school day.

After three weeks of chocolate, she started to feel more comfortable about her place in the classroom. The tears at drop off disappeared and she was making friends. Each day she came home telling us who she played with and the imaginary delicacies concocted in the sand box. As she found her place in the classroom, I tried to figure out my place as a parent.

Thanks Leticia/Tech Savvy Mama/Being Savvy DC/Mommy/BlogHer roomie…oh, blast it, sister friend! Your words educate and inspire. Rock on.

Rocknoceros Groupies by Tech Savvy Mama

If Captain Computer and Little Miss Techie had their own iPods, the first thing they would request to add to their playlists would be anything by Rocknoceros. We were introduced to Rocknoceros last January during their performances at a local coffee house and became hooked. Ever since, we’ve been checking their online calendar and following them around the DC Metro Area like groupies.

You can rock out to Rocknoceros this Sunday at the Taste of Wheaton in Silver Spring. Their performance begins at 11 am. For more information about Taste of Wheaton, click here.

Why do we love Rocknoceros?

Captain Computer and Little Miss Techie rock out to Rocknoceros’ catchy tunes while I love that the songs help teach my kids something as they listen. With songs like I Wish We Used (the Metric System), United States of America, The Finger Counting Song, they are like the new and much cooler School House Rock for our kids’ generation.

We are huge fans of their songs about space from their second CD Dark Side of the Moon Bounce. Blast Off taught Captain Computer to count down from ten while Apollo and Pluto fill Little Miss Techie’s desire to learn about space. The Finger Counting song off of their self titled debut album inspired Little Miss Techie to learn Spanish.

You can listen to Rocknoceros’ songs for free on their website.

However, if your children are like mine and are instantly hooked on Rocknoceros, you’ll need their songs to be portable. Download singles or the entire album on iTunes or get your own CDs of Dark Side of the Moon Bounce and their debut album through Amazon.

As good groupies, we buy all of our Rocknoceros music and fan paraphernalia to support great music. This is not a paid posts.

Acorn Hill Spring Fair on Saturday by Tech Savvy Mama

Spring Fair Marble Run

Spring is here and along with it comes beautiful flowers, sandals, and an abundance of school spring fairs. One of our favorite family spring fairs is held at Acorn Hill Waldorf Kindergarten and Nursery.

If you have never been to Acorn Hill, Spring Fair is a great reason to go. Up a little path and sitting on a hill off of Sligo Creek Parkway, Acorn Hill is a magical place where a cozy brick building with four light-filled classrooms and an astounding playground are nestled among huge trees. The Spring Fair is held on the school’s playground that contains a large sandbox and an amazing wooden climbing structure built out of logs and boards that have been smoothed by the hands of many children.

One of Little Miss Techie’s favorite Spring Fair games is the Marble Run. Built in one of the school’s two large sandboxes and decorated with beautiful flowers and branches, marbles run through tunnels and around a large hill until they reach their resting place at the end. Last year Little Miss Techie patiently waited her turn many times for her turn at the Marble Run.

This year the fishing game (also a favorite!) will be back along with Motowu, a Hopi game, and many other games for children of all ages. A marionette play of the Chinese fairy tale, The Magic Tapestry, will be presented in one of the classrooms. Children can make wands in another of the school’s classrooms.

If your child is like Little Miss Techie and you can’t manage to tear them away to leave, never fear! Sustenance is available for purchase at the fair. Food includes delicious baked items (vegan and organic items also available) from the bake sale and a vegetarian lunch of sushi rice salad, a cheesy casserole, fruit salad and black beans.

There is also a plant sale and beautiful handmade crafts, such as felted animals, made by the school’s parents are always a huge hit and sell out fast.

Reminiscing About Life Before Kids with a Rock-n-Tots Giveaway by Tech Savvy Mama

Last week we took a family vacation to Boston. The Boston area will always be near and dear to my Tech Savvy heart since it is where I spent two wonderful years during grad school

This Tech Savvy Mama used to love rockin’ the clubs in Boston as an alternative to my coursework. Dressing up and hitting Lansdowne Street with a bunch of friends was always a great way to spend a Friday or Saturday night. 10 years later, those same clubs are still there but I’ve moved on to more family friendly venues.

Get your groove back on with your children and rock out at Rock-n-Tot. Rock-n-Tot offers an afternoon of fun for families geared with kids ages birth through twelve. Held at the very hip Ultra Bar in Washington, D.C., Rock-n-Tot has a cash bar for parents and offers children complimentary juice boxes and snacks.

Experience The Dance Floor with shakers and scarves, relax in The Lounge filled with toys, puzzles, and books, and complimentary Parent Services that range from mini-massages, paraffin wax dip, eyebrow waxing, and/or golf pro tutoring.
