Spot’s Birthday Party at Adventure Theatre: A play for kids, for a great cause

Theater targeted for children as young as one year and up to elementary? YES! That’s the beauty of Spot’s Birthday Party at Adventure Theatre, opening this weekend! You can introduce your children to the joy of attending plays before they can even walk. It’s just for them! And every child who attends this show will receive a special birthday hat and surprise goodie bag too.

I’m sure you know Spot from the adorable graphic picture books by Eric Hill, and when your child attends the play it’s Spot’s B-Day! And your kid is invited to the party. Also attending the celebration will be Spot’s friends Tom the crocodile, Helen the hippo, and Steve the monkey will be there for fun, games, songs and magic.

The show opens on Friday, and you and your kids can even attend the special Pajama Party on Friday night. Show up in your p.j.s,, see the show and after the play nosh on milk and cookies! The Pajama Party is also a “Pay What You Can” performance, which means you can purchase your tickets at full price in advance if you would like to guarantee your tickets, or you may purchase your tickets starting at $5 at the door using cash only (but they might run out, it’s a gamble). Tickets go on sale exactly at 6:00pm.

Or you can attend the show for another time – a weekend matinee maybe – until November 2nd. Showtimes and tickets here.

Washington Kastles: See Wimbledon Winners Right Here in DC

Serena in DC Tennis

So you didn’t make it to Wimbledon, don’t fret. You can see 2009 and three-time Wimbledon Ladies’ Singles winner Serena Williams and her Washington Kastles teammates all this month in the second season of Advanta World TeamTennis (WTT). You can also see sister Venus Williams, Anna Kournikova and John McEnroe when their own WTT teams are in town.

Check out the schedule and purchase your tickets here (they’re going fast.) The matches take place in the intimate Kastles Stadium at CityCenterDC, located downtown in The District. All matches start at 7pm except for Sunday when they begin at 5pm.

Some fun facts:

  • All kids 16 & under receive an autograph from every home & visiting player after each match.
  • Discounts are available to groups of 10 or more. Get the whole gang together and call 202-483-6647 to reserve.
  • There are two goofy Kastles tennis ball mascots named Topspin and Slice that dance around at the matches.
  • Even though she’s an eleven-time Grand Slam winner, Serena is throwing herself into community work while she’s in town. Just today she hosted tennis clinics for tennis-playing kids in The District.

I’m definitely taking my high school senior brother Evan Slovak (an amazing writer, and fellow blogger, for SlowPlanet.com) to a match when he visits later this month. Sadly for him, he’ll just miss Anna Kournikova. But maybe I’ll take Charlie that night and snag her free autograph for Evan.

What else are sisters for?

Whew! That’s a lot of news. If you have something you’d like me to post that you believe will benefit the DC area parenting community, send it to me. Maybe I’ll post it, maybe I’ll add it to the calendar. Maybe I’ll simply vacuum my rug and play Monopoly with the kids…you never know! I’m probably more likely to post it if you have a familiarity with the goals of A Parent in Silver Spring and your offering is of service to others.
