Things Learned from Lovely Listservs

Do you read your neighborhood or local parenting listservs? They are wonderful and make our modern, urban world feel like we’re back in time chewing the fat at the general store. Just search for your neighborhood or town’s name on the Yahoo! Groups main page, and search for “moms” or “parents” and your town’s name if you are looking for parenting-specific forums.

Here’s what I have recently learned from the listservs in my ‘hood and mamaland, in no particular order:

  • Wheaton Plaza now has an electric train that runs along the first floor of the mall to give rides to kids that have made it through mom’s errands. It’s just like the one at White Flint.
  • The miniature steam engines at Wheaton and Cabin John Regional Parks and the carousel at Wheaton open on the first Saturday of spring break, March 22nd.
  • Mrs. K’s Toll House has added a 3,600 square foot wine cellar called “The Wine Press” to the famous restaurant. On March 12th Chateau St. Michelle winemaker Bob Berthau and on March 26th Gus Kalaris of Axios winemakers will host exclusive wine dinners, paired with Executive Chef Maurisee Upshur’s American cuisine, for patrons. $75 per person, excluding tax & tip. Reservations required, call 301.589.3500.
  • The Washington Nationals’ first game of the season is March 30th at RFK Stadium against the Braves, with an exhibition game at RFK against the Orioles on March 29th. Tickets available.
  • Montgomery County will send alerts to your e-mail address or mobile device in the event of serious weather, emergency or crisis. You can know when that ice storm is coming before you hit the roads, or plan ahead to work from home on those days schools will probably close. Information here.
  • Breast milk contains stem cells. OK, that one wasn’t very Silver Spring-specific, I just thought it was cool.

Special thanks to all the people whose helpful hints I just poached and posted here, you’re the best!

  1. Dan Reed says

“Wheaton Mall”? Ouch. Call it Wheaton Plaza, or Westfield Wheaton if you really want to be accurate, but please don’t call it Wheaton Mall. I have too many fond memories of Wheaton Plaza to see those words without my eyes watering a little.

  2. A train?! At Wheaton Plaza?! Oh, my life just got sooooo much better. Or worse, I’m not quite sure yet.

  3. The Nationals will their season on March 30 at their new home, Nationals Park. 🙂
