Best Discount Women’s Clothing Stores in Washington, DC Area

Best stores

Here is my list of the places I have had the best luck finding beautiful, wearable, on-trend and most importantly, affordable items for women in the DC area.

I love a good deal and frugal shops. Anything vaguely high fashion-y I usually purchase online through a sales site. For in-person shopping, my goal is to keep the bill below $30 per item and never pay full price.

Mind you, this list is coming from the perspective of a mom who lives in Silver Spring and sports a womanly bod. I am not a sample size who can pick up the leftover double zeros laying around on the back racks. I am a hard-won size 8-10,  5’7, have pushed out three children, and am 38 years old. Think Bridget Jones, the minivan years. Many of the stores on this list also offer plus and petite sizes.

1. TJ Maxx Olney – The best TJ Maxx I have visited in my life. Especially for dresses. I always have to stop myself from buying more than two. Also, the Home Goods next door is incredible for home decor.

2. Loehmann’s Rockville – What this Loehmann’s lacks in the casual dress department (although it does have a good evening wear section), it makes up for in denim. Awesome selection of Joe’s, J. Brand, and other premium denim brands in all standard sizes. Well-stocked petites section.

3. Violet Boutique in Dupont Circle – One of only two independent shops to make my list, this is a boutique experience that is actually accessible. Great tops and accessories.

4. J. Crew Factory Arundel Mills – Achieve that preppy casual chic, Alexa Chung, perfect pencil skirt and button down look for an average price of $19 per piece. The Leesburg outlet location is good too for shorts and tees, but I have the best luck in Arundel Mills scoring the most mainline J. Crew catalog-looking items for work events and going out sans kids.

5. Marshall’s Vienna – Making the haul over to NoVA from Silver Spring is worth it to me just for an hour in this mythical Marshall’s. It’s the best in the area.

6. Forever 21 Westfield Wheaton – Throw out your prejudices and suspend reality when you walk through the door. Pretend you are at Madewell. Block out the annoying strains of Flo Rida. Ignore anything that looks like you would have worn it to a sixth grade dance.  Now look at the remaining proffered items with a critical eye and watch as they miraculously transform from mallrat horror into an array of lovely weekend staples. I personally adore the slub knit tees and French-striped tops, all just $5-9!

7. Old Navy Manassas – I think an Old Navy that is as big as a CostCo. is a pretty wonderful way to spend an afternoon. Call me crazy. This place has everything, including a fabulous maternity section.

8. Urban Outfitters Gallery Place – For my hipster mama pals, you can achieve that thrift store look (and even some pre-owned and refurbished finds) without spending two hours slogging through Value Village. I like this location better than Georgetown as it is less picked over by students.

9. Gossip on 23rd in Arlington – The other indie on the list, everything here is less than $100, and a good deal of items can be found below the thirty mark. Fashionable but not overtly trendy items make up the inventory. Peruse the online shop for an idea.

10. H&M Downtown Silver Spring – Although I wanted to boycott this store since it opened in the space left vacant when my beloved Borders local closed, I couldn’t stay away for long. My favs are the dresses, but be sure to dry clean or they will shrink on you.

11. BONUS: Sale section of Anthropologie at Mosaic District in Fairfax/Merrifield – This Anthro has the best sale room in the back. It’s big, beautiful and the marked-down items look every bit as hip and new as the items at the front of store. When I’m browsing here I feel like I am shopping in Taylor Swift’s closet, although thankfully the selections are fully stocked with the M, L and XL sizes.

Honorable Mentions: Favorite locations of mine where you can find great deals, but not necessarily coming in under the $30 mark:

  1. If you are cool with buying things on consignment, I strongly recommend checking out Reddz Trading in Bethesda. There are some great deals there! I also really like Last Call Neiman Marcus in Rockville, TJ Maxx in Tysons Corner, Nordstrom Rack in Gaithersburg (Shady Grove Road), and Loehmann’s in Friendship Heights. Also you can’t beat Target for basic tank tops and T shirts.

  2. Ah, yes, consignment…I told a friend of mine about a place that has her favorites..Chico’s….and lots of it. The store is Carousel on Nebel St in Rockville. As for myself, as a plus-huggy size, who still likes fashion, I’m still looking. Lane Bryant is for much taller women and too “basic” looking. I love interesting, flattering , but plus size . Any suggestions?

  3. Maggie, have you ever looked at the blog Wardrobe Oxygen ? She often does posts like this from a plus size perspective.

  4. Thank you, thrift store mama…I took a look.
