#GivingTuesday 2013: Easy Ways We Can Help

This post is sponsored by #GivingTuesday and TheMotherhood. Funds received go to support the charities mentioned. All words and opinions are mine.

Although I am a professed consumerist, I don’t put much stock into Black Friday or Cyber Monday. I look for great deals all year online, and I have no patience for crazy crowds. I would much rather spend the time off with my loved ones.

I can get behind Small Business Saturday and especially #GivingTuesday. #GivingTuesday is a campaign to create a national day of giving on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving — this year on Tuesday December 3, 2013.  On this day, we can make donation gifts or pledge to volunteer with our families for our favorite causes and charities.

Maybe you have loved ones on your gift lists who would appreciate a donation in their name to a cause they love? Or maybe you are searching for a way to celebrate the holidays with your families through a service project.

Last year I committed my #GivingTuesday to helping Shot at Life. I co-hosted an event for bloggers that both raised money and raised awareness for this important effort to decrease the 1.5 million child fatalities each year from vaccine-prevetable diseases.

This year I am focusing on Washington, DC-area charities that directly help families in my community.

Put Ben’s Run or Other Upcoming Community Charity Runs on Your Calendar

I have cleared and marked our family calendar for April 5, 2014 to participate in Ben’s Run in Silver Spring. In just three years, since the first Ben’s Run in 2011, $153,000 has been donated  to Children’s National Medical Center to improve the treatment of children with cancer. You can also make a donation now to Ben’s Run, register for the race in January or commit to serve the race as a volunteer.

Become a Diaper Bank Ambassador for the DC Diaper Bank

The DC Diaper Bank provides 50,000 diapers a month to local families in need. However, we can increase that number by signing up too serve as community diaper drop locations as a DC Diaper Bank Ambassador. I am going to do this and provide a place for my neighbors to drop off their unused diapers! It’s an easy way to make a big impact simply by donating a corner of your basement and a little time posting your local  listserv.

Post an Unselfie

Another easy way to show your support is to take a photo, highlight your favorite causes and charities, and tag it #unselfie. Share it on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram between now and #GivingTuesday December 3.

Bring Food to the Capital Area Food Bank Stuff a Truck Events at Giant on December 13

On Friday, December 13th 16 Giant stores across the Washington metro area will Stuff Trucks in with non-perishable items. This food will help the Capital Area Food Bank feed more than 700,000 residents in need during the holiday season. Save the date to shop and also donate some food to hungry families. You can also host an office or school food drive or even a virtual food drive for the Capital Area Food Bank or donate.

Donate to Skyler’s Gift and Help Families Who Have Experienced Infant Loss

I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Tiffany Bowen, wife of Redskins Team Captain Stephen Bowen and a local mom since they moved here from Texas when Stephen signed with our home team.  Tiffany started Skyler’s Gift Foundation to provide financial support to families in need that have lost their newborn infants from complications of premature birth. After the tragedy of losing one of their twins after a premature delivery, they learned that many families cannot pay for a burial or memorial for their child. If they cannot pay, their child’s body is simply disposed of with the hospital’s medical waste. The Bowen family believes no one should have to face this loss alone and especially without the needed resources in place. My family and I have made modest donations to Skyler’s Gift because we agree that every child’s life should be honored.

Those are my #GivingTuesday suggestions. Which causes or charities do YOU support during the holidays and all year long?
